Michigan voters: Santorum connects better than Romney

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum promised Monday to revive manufacturing, cut taxes and shrink government, pledges that drew loud applause from conservative Michigan voters who said he was more in line with their values than native son and GOP rival Mitt Romney.

Santorum's growing connection with Michigan conservatives risks embarrassing Romney in his home state. Romney was counting on a strong finish in Michigan's presidential primary on Feb. 28 to carry him into the big, multistate round of voting a week later on Super Tuesday.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said his rival Rick Santorum is not a 'budget hawk' and cited Santorum's record of voting to raise the debt ceiling.

But Santorum, fueled by a recent trio of victories and sensing an opportunity to upset or at least bloody Romney with a strong primary finish of his own, is charging hard at a state that he says shares many of the same characteristics as his blue-collar state of Pennsylvania. Santorum pledged Monday that, under his administration of less government and more individual freedom, "manufacturing jobs will come back here to Muskegon."

See related: Romney criticizes Santorum fiscal record

Many of those at the standing-room-only rally at a Muskegon Holiday Inn said Santorum's message of religious and social conservatism was more in line with their values.

"I see Mitt Romney as more of a politician who has flip-flopped on some issues," said Hal Sisson, a 57-year-old media consultant from Norton Shores who, like Santorum, has seven children. "Rick Santorum has repeatedly been very conservative and has always stuck by his principles."

After holding a second rally at Hope College in Holland, Santorum got a standing ovation from GOP activists in Grand Rapids after criticizing President Barack Obama's policies, declaring they're "destroying business" and "crushing the economy of this country."

Back in September, Romney easily won just over 50 percent in a straw vote among nearly 700 GOP activists gathered on Michigan's historic Mackinac Island, compared to Santorum's seventh-place finish with 3.4 percent. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, looked especially strong in a Nov. 9 GOP presidential debate in Michigan where Santorum wasn't much of a factor. But Santorum since has gained significant ground on Romney.

A recent poll of 500 likely Michigan GOP primary voters by Glengariff Group Inc., conducted after Santorum swept contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, showed 34 percent backing the former Pennsylvania senator while 30 percent were behind Romney, within the 4.4 percent margin of error.

Romney has sensed the threat and has stepped up his attacks on the former senator, hitting him as a big-spending Washington insider. Romney planned to campaign in Michigan on Tuesday. His wife, Ann, also a native, campaigned in the state Monday and was making a pair of appearances Tuesday.

Romney is counting on his fatter campaign bank account and superior campaign organization to edge Santorum aside in the week left before Michigan votes. He has the backing of most of the state's GOP leaders, including Gov. Rick Snyder. In the state's most prosperous county — Oakland, just northwest of Detroit — county Executive L. Brooks Patterson predicted Romney's business expertise and his longtime ties to Michigan will pull voters in.

"Romney is a known quantity to us," Patterson said. "The people who know him and get to understand his positions and get to understand what he's capable of doing will flock to his side."

Although Santorum didn't mention Romney in his speech or the question-and-answer period that followed, he clearly echoed what many in the crowd thought of his opponent.

"I don't change like a well-oiled weather vane," Santorum said. "You may not agree with me, but you know where I'm going to stand."

Part of Romney's problem in Michigan is he seems to be struggling to reconnect with voters who backed the Detroit native four years ago, when he first ran for president, after promising to save jobs in the beleaguered auto industry as then-rival John McCain warned that lost auto jobs would never return.

Now Romney seems to be on the opposite side, opposing the federal bailout of General Motors and Chrysler. Fewer voters remember his father, George, who ran American Motors Co. before serving three terms as Michigan governor in the 1960s. And while Romney was seen four years ago as the conservative alternative to McCain, Santorum is the one many Michigan Republicans say they'll back in the state's presidential primary a week from Tuesday.

"I was a non-supporter of anybody until he came on the scene," Jody Kuhn, a 74-year-old retired community college staffer from Muskegon, said of Santorum. Kuhn said she likes his conservative views.

Not everyone thinks Santorum can go the distance, however.

Clarkston resident Rick Sutkiewicz said recently that he's backing Romney because he stands a better chance of beating President Barack Obama.

"Not that I like Romney best as a candidate," the 45-year-old said while eating dinner in Auburn Hills, home to Chrysler's headquarters and Sutkiewicz's heating and air conditioning business. Sutkiewicz likes a lot of what Santorum says but worries he has too many issues that can be exploited by opponents.

"There's a lot to pick at with Santorum," he said.

Santorum is using the same old hate based rhetoric, which means he is taking a page right out of the Obama campaign book. This country has become more hate based, divisive, and partisan in the last three years all thanks to our divider and chief.

If you want to know where all the jobs went, ask Bill Clinton why he signed NAFTA into law. Corporations are by their very nature set up not to care about the people they have working for them, only the profits they can make. So they lobby congress who also could careless about the American people, except when election time rolls around and then there is no shortage of promises being made that idiot voters actually think they mean.

Bush got slammed for the high price of gas because all his cronies were making billions. But under Obama gas prices are even higher and not a word from anyone. Apparently no one cares that gas and heating oil is up over 100% since Obama took office, like they don't affect jobs or the economy. Instead everyone jumps for joy at a 10.00 a week payroll tax holiday that steals from Social Security. Is it any wonder we keep electing the same idiots but expect different results, when people only harp on anything when it is politically convenient.

Yeah he was born in Michigan and hasn't lived there for how long? Yeah that is a true litmus test if ever there were one. Just like when Gore didn't win Tennessee right?

Obama does nothing but promote class warfare, and partisan divisive politics. He has divided this nation like no other president, and he blames everyone else for everything that goes wrong. So keep your hand out to Obama, I am sure those IOU's will be worth something, maybe.

Rick, your posts are a distortion of the truth. Obama has tried to unify the country, the TPublicans have done everything they could dream up to divide it. Santorum crass lies do not qualify him as worthy of holding the office. He is a phony weakling trying to take advantage of the repeated vulgar attacks on anything Obama has tried to do to solve the problems left him by the idiots. Santorum is a sleaze and anyone that has not fallen in step with the right wing Nazi style hate campaign can see it. That is why Santorum will go down in flames if he gets to the nomination. Otherwise, keep up the rant, you are very entertaining! LOL

I hope Santorum gets the nomination, it will be a Obama land slide. Santorum isn't even in touch with 75% of the population. Right now, his beliefs are off the wall, and if you want to vote him in, remember that 75% of the people think he is nuts. Micky Mouse has a better chance to beat Obama than him!!!!

Oh I see now, as long as you support Obama he is trying to unite the country. Just like all the problems Obama faces were left to him by Republicans. Which means you prove my point, this is the most politically partisan this country has ever been. So just in case you missed it while ranting in a true hate filled diatribe, I never said who I was for, just that none of you have the sense to truly honest. Just partisan, and that means you either cannot think for yourself, or you just like being spoon fed.

You seem to be the one making up stuff to support your hate filled comments. Your mindless drivel proves the point that the extreme right has only one agenda - to badmouth Obama so they can get back in to continue the policies that bankrupted the US. Ain't gonna happen this time! The stupid redneck support for the creeps is over.

PS, it does not matter who you are for, we know enough about your higher level critical skills to know that candidate will lose.

Which party made it their goal to make Obama a one term President as soon as he was elected, instead of working on the economy and jobs?

It's republicans that are dividing this country.

The gap between the wealthy and the poor increased under "trickle down" economics and the "starve the beast" republican policies.

The class warfare is the result of the Republicans not the democrats.

I'm not sure if you've heard, but a whole lot of people are a whole lot smarter, and whole lot more skeptical than back in Bush's day. That said, Bush divided this country like no other, and if you don't want anybody to remind you of that, then quit bringing it up. We all know that it was Bush who crashed our economy, raised and lowered our "threat" level to match his "unpopularity", etc.

Now, if you can, TELL US about ANYTHING good Republicans have done in the past 3-1/2 years, because all we've seen is Republicans stalling our recovery, working on lowering our wages, and hatching plans on how to PREVENT the American People from have good paying jobs and Quality Health Care.

Another brilliant diatribe. Just where do you think the stimulus money went? It didn't keep unemployment under 8%, there are still no jobs, but all the wealthy donors of the Obama campaign are doing just fine. Almost seems like Obama and the Democrats have spent the last three years and almost 6 trillion dollars in borrowed money doing exactly what you accuse the Republicans of doing, taking care of those politically connect to them. But don't worry, Obama is going to add anther 10.00 per week to your paycheck instead of funding Social Security, and you will be able to buy another two gallons of gas, or one gallon of gas and a loaf of bread. Now that should get the economy moving again.

Interesting that Forbes actually printed what the conservatives have been saying since January 2011. Gallup is still using the same formula that the fed used. According to Gallup the unemployment rate is currently 9.5% and the U-6 is 19%.

I am ashamed of the Michigan Republicans to think that Santorum could possibly be President. His far right, wacky religious beliefs would affect every area of his policy. Plus, he has absolutely no foreign policy credentials, has not worked on tough economic policies, and seems to pander only to people with his religious beliefs. No Thank You.

Translation: "This is a Catholic state. We aren't going to vote for a Mormon." Much of Michigan is a blue-collar, very conservative, Roman Catholic state. They don't relate to a Mormon from Massachusetts, even a very conservative one. You can gain a good understanding from reading about events of the late 1960's and 1970's, as well as a county by county breakdown of election results. You might enjoy Michael Moore's story of growing up in Flint, "Here Comes Trouble."

{Private note to rational people: I threw the reference to Michael Moore in there just to get the wackos excited. Nevertheless, it's a good book, with humor and experiences from his early years}.

Michigan is a schizophrenic state. The rural areas are really conservative and the areas like Detroit and Ann Arbor are more liberal. The real test for Romney will be his ability, if possible, to out poll the rural areas in the metropolitan areas. The problem, as we have seen throughout this Republican debacle, the really conservative voters are much more vocal and zealous in their support as opposed to more moderate voices. The great silent majority in this country now represents moderates, progressives and the better informed voters in the country. Let’s hope they really turn out in the general election.

Exactly. You want lower health-care costs? Eliminate the free ride for legislators. At the very least make them pay their fair share of the cost and no Cadillac benefits. Where's the legislation to make this happen? It will go nowhere until you hound your legislators to make it happen. Social media gives you great access - use it!

A scary thought "Santorum connects better than Romney" but then when I consider who Santorum connects better with - I breath a sigh of relief because that is only within the GOP.

As an independent I am deeply concerned about the GOP's position on women's right to access contraception -- this not the same as being anti-abortion but a step further, farther, and frankly off the cliff. The GOP, christians in general don't have a problem with Viagra or other male sexual meds -- is it me or is this just hypocrisy...And what is with the House hearings on this "contraception issue" without having women testifying?

Santorum, and the ultra-conservatives are hell bent on reviving the culture wars -- which I and many other independents could care less about. And even if Romney gets the nomination he will be hellbound to campaign on the ultra-conservative platform -- forget about fixing the economy, truly reducing the deficit (spending cuts alone will not do it), or bringing our troops home from Afghanistan or resolving the "war on terror," or the enviroment or health care -- they - the GOP - simply want to force everyone to live according to there world view.

I for one am tired of these so-called culture warriors, like Santorum and long for leadership that values comprimise and service to the nation as a whole and not the party!

Oz -This is what the right has come to:

The FBI revised their definition of rape as of December 2011, and I quote: Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim."

Now, with the Virginia requirement that women undergo a vaginal ultrasound prior to having an abortion, without their consent, the State of Virginia is essentially mandating the rape of women in order to obtain an abortion. What could be more inhumane? The first woman in Virginia that undergoes this invasion of her rights should request that the FBI arrest every state legislator in Virginia for rape. A similar law is being considered in Pennsylvania as well.

Great strategy to counteract a clearly inhumane piece of legislation. Maybe we could get a law passed that mandates corn cob insertion into any male legislator who passes such vulgarity.

                      Tex - another idea -

I find the republican attitude toward contraception and abortion disgusting. Even more so since it seems to be primarily perpetrated by angry white men. Women have, and should retain, their reproductive rights. For some reason, the republicans seem to cast women as the “evil doers” in the procreation process, forgetting it takes “two to tango.”

Ok, I propose this. There have been approximately 600,000 vasectomies performed last year, which is commendable. To be fair and equal, all men, before having a vasectomy, should have to undergo at least an hour of counseling, as this is permanent, and have a scope inserted up their penis to make sure there are no problems performing the procedure. Afterwards, they should be forced to produce sperm by ejaculation in the doctor’s office to provide evidence the procedure worked. Fair is fair.

Ozilot...why don't you take a poll of Christians...the true Christian will not take those meds...you won't find hypocrisy. Anyhow, if you do, that's the first thing you will complain about. FYI...The Christian worldview believes that a throne (i.e. presidency) is established on righteousness (Proverbs 16:12), otherwise there is no blessing for a nation. At least acknowledge that Santorum is a man of convictions. Since they are not your convictions, he must be a bigot then, right? I agree that many so called Christians are not acting like Christians because they are theologically illiterate. If they were more literate, then you would be, gee, living in an era like when we first began as a nation where theology was incorporated into every aspect of life. Remember, if Christians don't follow their beliefs then they are hypocrites...the battle today is not about contraception...it's about ideology or worldview. Who's right? Continue to voice your opinion or view. Just because one side wins the election does not make them right. America is a pop culture being tossed back and forth. Somethings going to give. It will be interesting who wins out in 2012.

Speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, a form of mental illness usually associated with overly stimulated spiritualism, is a relatively well studied psychological disorder. If Rick Santorum starts that up again, the RNC might pull him off stage with one of those long hooks. But then, they let Dubby wander around in the darkness for 8 years, so who knows?

ghilde, you obviously weren't listening. Graham said that he takes a man by his word and at the end, he looks at his actions to see if his word is true (i.e otherwise, the words are hypocrisy). This is not judgment rather an opinion. Judgment is when someone takes action upon someone else (i.e. like a ruling/judgment from a judge). Should we just lay off all the judges in this country? Hey, that would cut the federal deficit some I'm sure. You don't understand the bible. If you are a judge, then the way you judge others is the same way you will be judged. Look in verse 5, after examining youself, then you can encourage/judge or take the speck from you brother's eye. If I never speak the truth or make a judgment about a situation to my brother, then there is no chance of becoming a better person (both judge or discerner and brother)...Ah, I forgot everything is becoming ok in this country.
