Republican presidential hopeful and former Massachsetts Gov. Mitt Romney greets supporters outside of the Webster School polling station on January 10, 2012 in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Updated at 4:08 pm ET
Assuming that Mitt Romney scores a solid victory in today’s New Hampshire primary, how is the struggle for the Republican nomination likely to play out? Is it likely that Romney will march through South Carolina’s Jan. 21 primary and then Florida’s ten days later and clinch the nomination? Or will a costly war of attrition grind on for months?
The defining feature of the GOP race remains as it was at the outset last spring: Romney, the favorite of many party regulars, elected officials, members of Congress, and business leaders, is distrusted by many conservatives in the party.
But since the anti-Romney conservative vote is split five ways, the odds are that Romney will prevail sooner or later.
Even though some of his rivals, especially Texas Gov. Rick Perry have proven themselves to be prodigious fundraisers, it’s far from certain whether any of them has the combination of money, organizational ability, and smooth debate performances to stay viable.
Conservative activists in the Republican Party, as well as some of the Ron Paul supporters outside the GOP, have been unable or unwilling to unite behind one candidate and “natural selection” hasn’t operated quickly enough to choose the fittest anti-Romney candidate.

Some of Romney’s five rivals are spending time skirmishing with each other: For example, on Monday former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s campaign circulated an article from the Washington Times which detailed former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum support of a proposed increase in a state sales tax in Pennsylvania counties near Pittsburgh in order to pay for building new football and baseball stadiums in 1996.
Meanwhile New Hampshire Santorum supporter Karen Testerman told NBC’s Chuck Todd on Monday, “I am looking at who is going to best represent a role model for our children and the future. I have a real problem with Newt Gingrich and his marriages and his current wife being one of his -- a home breaker, in essence.”
Even as this fratricidal warfare goes on among Romney’s rivals, they must contend with the problem of how to attack Romney without alienating some elements of the Republican coalition.
For example, Gingrich has been attacking Romney’s role as head of the buyout firm Bain Capital in the 1980s and 1990s, when it invested in and restructured troubled companies, sometimes resulting in worker layoffs. In Gingrich’s version of Romney’s career at Bain, what he had done was “figuring out clever legal ways to loot a company, leaving behind 1,700 families without a job.”
Likewise Perry, campaigning in South Carolina Tuesday, took a populist tone in attacking Romney’s Bain work.
"They’re vultures sitting out there on the tree limb waiting for the company to get sick," Perry said of buyout firms such as Bain Capital during a stop in Fort Mill, S.C. "And then they swoop in, they eat the carcass, they leave with that and they leave the skeleton.”
It’s not clear how that anti-Bain message – which the Democratic National Committee is also pushing right now -- will play with affluent business-oriented South Carolina Republicans in places such as the Greenville/Spartanburg area where big corporations such as BMW, Michelin and General Electric have had manufacturing operations for decades.

But to some in conservative ranks, the rhetorical assault on Romney’s Bain career seemed in danger of tipping over into anti-capitalist demagoguery.
The free-market group The Club for Growth, not ordinarily a Romney ally, came to his defense on the Bain issue, saying of Gingrich "the fact that he would stoop to economically ignorant class warfare rhetoric to promote his own political campaign is downright Obamaesque." It demanded that Gingrich apologize to Romney.
The shape of the 2012 Republican race conforms to the pattern of previous battles for the nomination in 1968, 1976, 1988, 1992, 1996, and 2000.
In each case there was an established party favorite who faced one or more conservative challengers. And in each case the Establishment candidate prevailed – although sometimes only after a prolonged struggle.
If none of the current crop of anti-Romney candidates seems strong enough to topple him, it’s not as if there haven’t been an abundance of other would-be contenders, hoped-for contenders, and rumored contenders who might have challenged Romney.
At various points in the past 12 months there have been declared candidates who failed to achieve success (former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota), would-be candidates who chose to stay out of the race (Indiana Gov. Mitt Daniels, former Florida governor Jeb Bush, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie), a candidate who withdrew from contention after allegations of scandal (Herman Cain), and one celebrity real estate tycoon who blustered about running, but did not (Donald Trump).
All the while, Romney was raising money, securing support from elected officials, and investing in a careful strategy that built the foundation to win not just the first two events, Iowa and New Hampshire, but the primaries that follow. Romney’s campaign has been running television ads in Florida, for example, and mailing out absentee ballots to Florida voters, beginning mid-December.
Romney also met the high threshold of getting on the Virginia ballot – signatures of at least 10,000 voters, and at least 400 in each of the state’s congressional districts. No other candidate except Ron Paul met the Virginia requirement. Perry and Gingrich tried, but fell short. Virginia holds its primary on March 6.
So there’s a paradox here: Romney is “beatable,” in a less secure position than an incumbent president swatting away an upstart primary challenger, as President George H.W. Bush did in 1992.
And yet none of Romney’s rivals so far has showed sufficient competence or charisma to become the sole survivor. Perry, for instance, became notorious for his inept and inarticulate debate performances.
And Gingrich offended many Republicans almost as soon as he launched his presidential bid last May by denouncing House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan’s Medicare redesign as “right-wing social engineering.” He added, “I don`t think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for a free society to operate.”
His comments produced headlines such as “the Amazing Political Self-Destruction of Newt Gingrich” and “Meltdown on the Launch Pad.”
In a moment made famous on YouTube, one Iowa Republican spotted Gingrich a few days after he made his critique of the Ryan plan and told him, “You’re an embarrassment to our party….Why don’t you get out before you make a bigger fool of yourself?”
Gingrich not only recovered from that fiasco but at one point last month soared to a lead in polls not only in Iowa, but in South Carolina and Florida – only to finish a dismal fourth in the Iowa caucuses. This turn of events shows how unpredictable this race has been and could yet be.
NBC's Carrie Dann contributed to this story

"Romney’s campaign has been running television ads in Florida, for example, and mailing out absentee ballots to Florida voters, beginning mid-December."
While true his campaign has been running ads here, I hope his campaign is not sending out absentee ballots.....in Fl, that is a function of a Supervisor of Elections office......can you explain Tom Curry?
Some of Romney's best press is coming from Team Obama and opposition Republicans complaining about Bain Capital employee cutting. Hard working citizens WANT Romney to GIVE HALF THE WASHINGTON BUREAUCRATS busy killing business with 100,000 PAGES OF NEW economy killing REGULATIONS per year THEIR WELL DESERVED PINK SLIPS. How fair is it for hard working citizens earning considerably less when Obama hires OVER 100,000 NEW BUREAUCRATS at an AVERAGE FEDERAL SALARY OF $126,500/ YEAR?
Madison:
Not one single right-winger has been able to meet this challenge. Why don't you be the first?
Show one single regulation - just one - that is killing the economy. JUST ONE!
Hey, girl, go for the gold. I am calling you out as an outright liar. Prove me wrong. Show proof that there are more than 100,000 new bureaucrats that earn an average salary of $126,500.
A final challenge! Show the courage to admit you are spreading lies and apologize for doing so.
Uh oh, say it isn't so, Mit Wit is a cheater??? He is a regular snake oil salesman.
Mitt asked for a bailout in 1994 from the fed gov and got one. Yep TEN million in cold hard cash. And he complains that GM got one????
Romney is the biggest, creepiest, lying hypocrite to step foot in sheep clothing in decades.
David! The right wing has nothing but lies and rhetoric. They fabricate these arguments to get their sheep to fall in line so they can gain support. It is my belief that the majority of the right wing in this country is mentally challenged. Madison is clearly nothing more than a sheep.
Gingerbread Mom Isn't Florida also the place where the blind and infirm are searched out and convinced to fill out absentee ballots and send them in? During the last election a representative of one of the parties, ID and all came to her door and asked my blind mother if she had voted yet. Upon being told no she had not and that she was blind this person told her you can still vote I will fill it out for you. Mom responded I am blind you can put down anything you want so no thank you. So this means this person had the forms doesn't it?
During the same election a very good friend of my mom's who is older than mom's 87 years got a phone call offering her a ride to the polls and even brought her to McD's afterwards and bought her a burger. I have not asked her how she votedbut I wonder if they did?
David Walker
You have to be a employee! Government Intervention STOPS Business from forming, starting up, and once started, the amount of paperwork to STAY in business is ridiculous.
One can start with environmental impact, then go to, building codes, employee codes, tax codes, and go from there! There are more government agencies, leaching a living off of enforcing, useless, arbitrary codes, being enforced, that NEED TO BE ELIMINATED and save taxpayers dollars.
MtMike lotsanumbers:
I made my living in self-employment, bub. No one stopped me from forming a business. I can tell you for a fact that it was right-wing lawmakers who wrote legislation that favored their campaign contributors. They wrote legislation that restricted business people who were competing against their contributors. That's the way it really is.
I've been in that world. Don't come to these fora and sling your BS. I asked for proof. You got nuthin' but hot air.
Is this campaign for real and other than Ron Paul have any solutions that even get off the ground.
Newt never could believe he could be elected, but let's see what he does with lewftover campaign $$$$$$$.
What is needed is a real debate in which follow-up questions are asked.
Currently we are still operating under Bush-era spending on war and voodoo economics of "trickle-down" tax cuts for the rich and resulting deficits, as well as supply-side deregulation of Wall Street (Dodd-Frank is not Glass Steagall thanks to the GOP), along with elimination of the Fairness Doctrine (and FOX Noise having to drop their tag-line of "fair and balanced" due to lawsuit rather than regulation) and now the addition of Citizens United giving corporations the ability to influence elections and therefore democracy.
Instead of taking responsibility for the 2008 economic crisis and Great Recession thereafter, Teapublicans argue that the last decade of voodoo economics would work if tax cuts for the rich/corporations and deregulation of Wall Street were...more extreme. Wow, WTF?
Rather than own up, Teapublicans try to blame slow economic recovery on the president and Dems for the stimulus (which the CBO and other neutral experts have proved did help) and for the Affordable Care Act (which is merely regulation of abuses in private health insurance that isn't anything close to "socialized medicine." And that won't go into full affect until 2014 with anti-trust type competition via an Exchange, like who's against that? Yet we are already seeing savings from it).
And in the meantime Americans have started to catch on to Teapublican sabotage of the economy via obstructionism from non-stop filibuster, to the debt ceiling debacle, to blocking the Jobs Act including the most recent attempt to block extension of the payroll tax cuts. Yet despite sabotage by the Do-Nothing Party of No, jobs started to improve after President Obama's election, and the economy is improving albeit slowly.
Debate Moderators need to focus on this hypocrisy first and foremost. Teapublicans are having a problem with blame versus credit. They can only blame the president and Dems, and can never give credit -- And in fact fail to own up to the economic meltdown, the lies about jobs in 2010, and instead try to steal credit every chance they can--for what, obstruction?!
It's reached such a point of illogical hypocrisy as to be glaringly obvious to sane voters, yet where are the @#$%& hard, serious, drill-down questions in these debates? Teapublicans, you've got a LOT of 'splainin' to do!
David Walker: I know that you only asked for ONE example of a "Job Killing" Obama regulation and I did not see any answers so here goes. Of course, I have 7 of them instead of ONE. And I list what it will cost per year for the businesses to implement these new regulations.
EPA
Reconsideration of the 2008 Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards Annual Cost $19-90 Billion
National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Coal and Oil-Fired Electric Utility Steam Generating Units Annual Cost $10 Billion
National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Major Source Industrial, Commercial & Institutional Boilers and Process Heaters Annual Cost $3 Billion
Standards for the Management of Coal Combustion Residuals Generated by Commercial Electric Power Producers Annual Cost $.06 - 1.5 Billion
DOT/FMCSA
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, Rearview Mirrors Annual Cost $2 Billion
Electronic On-Board Recorders and Hours of Service Supporting Documents Annual Cost $2 Billion
Hours of Service Annual Cost $1 Billion
At a total annual cost of $28 - 128.5 Billion
sonmanvb, you have given us a list of regulations. And you have given an associated cost.
But there is still no indication from you that these regulations "killed" jobs. Or that they were unnecessary regulations. Or that there was not some benefit attached.
For example, I am all for cleaning up the pollutants in the air and consider it a worthwhile expenditure, if not a critical one.
If people and businesses would behave like ladies and gentlemen, we would not need regulations. But people and businesses cannot do that, so we need regulations to protect ourselves and our environment.
If Romney wins, we'll finally have a liberal in the White House!
TruePatriot,
All your plays on words are cute. The meltdown's biggest factor was the governments play in the housing market that artificially raised demand for houses which you didn't even mention. Both the republicans and the democrats are at fault, you can't lay it with any one party.
Of course the stimulus by Obama helped, it pumped more money into the system. But by the way they spent the money, the stimulus was a short term solution because it created government jobs (mostly) that go away once projects are completed and those people are again unemployed. An example is Solyndra - great that those jobs were made a couple years ago but now the company is bankrupt and the people are unemployed.
The stimulus did put people to work and did sustain some businesses through the crunch, though it would have been better spent if they had focused it elsewhere. Problem is that the poorly used money wasn't just created out of no where - it came from massive borrowing which contributed to our countries credit downgrade from AAA status. When businesses take out a loan they figure out how they can make money over the cost of the loan rather than throw it wherever.
Instead of coming up with fun words to bash republicans I suggest you do some real studying on the issues and possibly taking some economics/finance classes.
OK David Walker,
Here's is just one regulation that is killing CA Valley farmers: The Delta Smelt is a minnow that has a lifespan of about three weeks, but is responsible for the loss of water flow from the CA Delta to the Central Valley farmers.
Without ample supply of water, valley farmers can't grow crops that feed the US and the world. This small fish, which is consumed by the Stripped Bass introduced to the Delta waters by the Fed Gov., has no value to the overall wild fish population, but it has produced environmental and economic for the farmers.
The environmentalists claim that these small minnows are being reduced due to the intake of the fish into the pumps that take the delta water to the farmers. This governing agency is helping to promote more unemployment in the valley, reducing the available land for crops, serving no real value.
How about the over-regulation of the Air-Boards that regulate everything in the CA environment? It is a fact that much of the CA polution is derived from winds bringing polution from China and other eastern Asian Nations, dropping into the CA landscape. Certain particulates have been identified from those countries, but Californians are paying the costs due to the regulatory agencies claiming all polution is from the vast amounts of man-made polution from CA. We pay in higher costs to keep our cars on the road (taxes), the inability of industry to move into CA, as well as higher costs to consumers for food products from the farmers.
Do these two items satisfy your statement in post #32.2? And there are more David. You don't reside in CA, so you may not be aware of the many dysfunctional things that happen here thanks to big government.
sonmanvb-- The reason there are warnings on products, for example plastic bags or cords on blinds is because someone died from it. Of course some regulations have unintended consequences, and have to be reworked. Personally I like protections from polluters, poisons, E. Coli, fraud, etc. I lived in area that required a Super Fund clean up of the water (due to strip minining I believe), and lived across the Insterstate from a refinery. The water was still horrible, and I had to wash black soot off the walls when I moved. Go live in a third-world country for awhile if you want to know what it's like to have no regulations, and you'll kiss the ground when you return to the good ole USA.
What I don't like is being forced to buy something from the private sector like auto or health insurance, so would rather take individual responsibility via non-profit government administrated programs for these things if mandated (e.g., Social Security). I'll never understand why the right-wing wants to be forced to keep buying insurance from greedy middlemen in the private sector, or rely on greedy Wall Street for their retirement, or greedy companies to be benevolent toward workers, etc.
But anyone who believes regulations prevent people from engaging in business ventures or generating profits is off their rock. This is just one of many lies used by pro-Big Business Teapublicans to get more campaign funds and to excuse the failures of voodoo economics.
natemesis -- I agree that the push for home ownership belongs to both Parties, though Dubya pushed this the hardest -- After all the housing industry was the only sector producing jobs (which were barely keeping pace with population growth) and generating tax revenues despite the tax cuts (particularly the 2003 cuts for the rich during time of war). But Freddie and Fannie were followers, not leaders. The housing crisis was a direct result of toxic mortgage securities on Wall Street thanks to deregulation pushed by the GOP.
Sonmanvb and Fielden:
Thank you fielden, I couldn't have done better, but I am going to add a little and double down on the job-killing aspect. Sonmanvb, you haven't shown job killing regs. You have shown associated costs, which are passed on to the consumer. You have also shown regs that are people-saving.
I must say I had a good laugh at the cost estimates. Gosh, somewhere between 28 and 128-billion. How's that work in your world? "Well sir, our estimate for your car repairs is $28.00, give or take a hundred bucks."
In every case, you cited regulations that are directly related to health and/or safety. Some of the costs you cite have risen simply by virtue of the fact that many companies dragged their feet coming into compliance. "Gosh, we've only known about this for five years."
Lastly, I wonder whether people reading your numbers are aware that the figures are supplied by the regulated industries. You know you can always turn to Big Business when you're seeking honesty and integrity, right?
The EPA regulates the environment for ALL the citizens of this country. Even if you were able to cite TRUE job losses, they pale next to reduced illness and death caused by asthma, emphysema, cancers, and so many more preventable illnesses. I'm going out on a limb on this one, but I'd bet most citizens would opt for a few extra cents or dollars in their purchases if it means no more Love Canals, no burning rivers, no dead lakes, no mercury in the air they breathe, no burning tap water. You know what I mean, or are profits always the number one consideration in your world?
Winemaker:
I don't flash bona fides as a rule, but I'm going to make an exception for you. I was a water director in California. You don't have a clue.
The water that flows to California farmers comes courtesy of the taxpayers of California and the Federal Government - the State Water Project and the Central Valley Project. As part of their agreement with the feds, Central Valley farmers were and still are expected to pay for their water. They do not pay even close to what they agreed, and what they do pay doesn't pay for maintenance. Spare me your crocodile tears for deadbeat farmers who consume the vast amounts of water in California at the expense of the Delta's health.
For those who are unaware, go check out Boswell, Salyer, Irvine, other monstrous corporate water users. Check out the incredible water abuse in southern California courtesy of Mulholland and company. Check the wasted fisheries. For a real eye-opener, read Battling the Inland Sea, or Cadillac Desert. Barely a century ago, the largest inland lake in the United States was not one of the Great Lakes, it was located right in Central California.
Oh golly no winemaker, we should roll over for those poor regulated monster corporations. All they've done is break every single promise they've made. Of course, without cheap water, we might have to pay the REAL cost of a Merlot.
The pumps. Oh my god, the pumps. Last time I looked, pumping water south requires about 3-4% of ALL power in California. Subsidies, anyone? Given the fact that you seem to know virtually nothing about how water works in California, I'm not surprised that you would toss off the minnow as an inconvenience, rather than as an important link in a food chain for which you have no respect.
Perhaps you'd care to address the fact that artesian springs have virtually disappeared. How about declining water tables and cones of depression.
With China being a non-factor in the world economy when I was a kid, perhaps you can explain for us lesser lights what caused the incredible smog in the Los Angeles basin 60-years ago. I know it was pollution controls and those evil regulations that are solely responsible for putting polluters' feet to the fire to clean up their mess.
Over-regulation? BS!
TruePatriot
Don't put the blinders on. I know there was republican involvement, but don't deny the democrats involvement. The Clinton administration urged Freddie and Fannie to increase loans to low income borrowers, and to do this Freddie and Fannie loosened its standard on loans it would buy from Wall Street even accepting subprime loans.
The housing crisis was not a direct result of already owned mortgages on Wall Street - it was a direct result of loosened standards by Freddie and Fannie for mortgages that it accepted from Wall Street. This gave Wall Street permission to get crappier loans and artificially created demand in the housing sector.
I could also mention the reform act in 2005 brought by Republicans to change things, but no one realized how bad it was and it was dropped.
David Walker,
What about all the oil drilling regulations????? Do you think we might be able to create more jobs if the government wasn't worrying more about polar bears than humans? Look at North Dakota. Free up oil drilling and let the economy grow.

David Walker,
What about all the oil drilling regulations????? Do you think we might be able to create more jobs if the government wasn't worrying more about polar bears than humans? Look at North Dakota. Free up oil drilling and let the economy grow.
-----------------
When we have more than 3% of the oil rerserves, maybe we can drill more. But if you want, you can start fracking and see how that affects your drinking water.
Which is more important: clean drinking water or jobs?
natemesis-- While it's nice to see you lighten up on the ad hominem attacks, your are still wrong. Freddie and Fannie did not help matters, and why President Obama has pused to dismantle these organizations over time. But the economic meltdown was due to deregulation of banking (ending Glass Steagall), which allowed high risk investments to be guaranteed by the government/tax payer -- The risk was initiated by the financail industry, not Freddie and Fannie, which were followers.
And also intiated by Wall Street's maniuplation of toxic mortage securities, and we know this because they hedged against these knowing these were crap -- Heck, they've been committing fraud in many areas, not just this. Now one problem faced is trying to determine who is even holding the note when there is a foreclosure because the securities were bundled, split into pieces, and manipulated to such an extent it will take decades to sort it all out.
This is just the deregulation fallacy of supply-side voodoo economics that has been debunked in the last decade -- Along with "trickle-down" tax cuts for the rich and corporations, leaving us still asking where are the jobs? Hiring is based on supply and demand. Demand comes from disposable income, which comes from good jobs with good wages enjoyed by the majority A.K.A. the middle class (not the richest 1%). When the middle class does well, everyone does well including businesses and the rich. In other words it is a bottom-up process, not "trickle-down." A strong middle class is also important to preservation of democracy.
westbury64 -- As already pointed out above, we have a lot of natural gas, but in comparison to other reserves in the world, we have very little oil--especially oil that is cost effective to extract. The pipeline from Canada to the gulf would only help Canadians sell the oil on the global market, though all oil, no matter where it is drilled, is sold on the global market. Giving Big Oil breaks only lines the pockets of Big Oil.
Why do conservatives hate our country so much?
Poor Mitt Romney. If he ever got a pink slip and found himself unemployed, his fortune would only allow him to live on $100,000 a year for the next 2,500 years. Of course that doesn't include any interest accrued on the savings. Poor guy. I can see how most Americans can relate to the fear of being fired and having to deal with the idea of such a burden.
Follow-on to the post above, we have had record oil production under President Obama. The reason gas prices are high has been due to speculation, which brings us back to Wall Street and lack of regulations.
Back to the article -- I can see it now, Romney wins the nomination and Christie runs with him as VP. It will be Jersey-style Bain capitalism in which businesses must pay protection money or be raided. Teabaggers will finally have their "every man, woman, and child for his/herself" anarchy, possibly a theocratic version of it. Weird? Is it? Utah's monopoly of liquor sales is a case in point, and remembering prohibition was the start of the mob...
Dont bother with Walker DI (you pick the words) he asks for facts and then disses everything. Or asks for proof that would put the presenter in a position of vulnerability by proving what they said. I almost fell for it once and at last moment thought better of it. I will tell you that my best friend was one of just about 6,000 people hired by the IRS (his position was a director level) just prior to the freeze early last year. He worked for them for 6 months until he could not stand it any more. Once he found out that he could not directly control the union workers under his dept. he quit and went to work for a private staffing company. His starting IRS salary was in the range of 130k. Ok Walker DI spew about and thanks for letting us know you worked for the California State gov. at least we know where your attitude comes from.
Romney is a banker, not a businessman. There is a difference. Businessmen create wealth. Bankers just shuffle money around and keep as much as they can for themselves while they do it.
TruePatriot - I agree with most of what you say even the middle class part. The point where I disagree with is in the first paragraph. High risk investments were guaranteed by the government/tax payer through Freddie and Fannie because Freddie and Fannie would purchase those high risk speculations from Wall Street. This made those high risk investments low risk investments when they were sold to Freddie and Fannie. Otherwise, Wall Street wouldn't have made those loans...though you could argue that selling the loans and loosening Freddie and Fannies standards was a part of deregulation.
The main point I was getting at was that the great recession comes from the government involving itself in the economics of the housing market, creating the artificial demand that was eventually deflated. It was not the tax policies of any one party.
Actually, it's not something too abnormal to the US, as you'll see a long history of boom and bust in our country.
Porter Rockwell - Please study venture capital and private equity. These venture capital and private equity firms are where startup companies and struggling companies get the money needed to grow. Entrepreneurs need them, though they don't necessarily love them. They fund many private companies.
David, Are you one of those displaced state legislators appointed to the water board? Come on David, the environmentalists continually cry that the Delta Smelt are disappearing due to the pumping situation. It's in the news every time the outcry is made against this minnow!
As for the cost of water in the valley, what does this have to do with over-regulation that we are discussing? The farmers are paying for the water......it isn't being channeled to them and field are not being farmed because of it.
Certainly some of the corporate farmers are abusing the system, but are they also not those who are the special interest groups who fund the dysfunctional spending democrats that control the regulations? Many of the farmers I know in the valley are not those corporate groups you like to refer to. Most valley farms are family owned, and don't have the same contacts with the lawmakers the corporate groups do.
Certainly David, could it be a factor in the atmospheric conditions which is shifting the rains from CA? Drought has an impact - or is that a condition of global warming?
Oh, and David, I do pay considerable fees for the water I require for the crops. And I do pay considerable amounts of money to kill off the glassy-winged sharpshooter that could end my business overnight. We are continually informed of what we can and can't do or use for this pest.
Keep in mind David, 'Food grows where water flows!'
Can't wait to sign the patition to have the California legislature move to a part time entity vs. a full time legislature with those dysfunctional members meeting every two years, have a salary of $15K annual, with no per diem to use as additional income.
Perhaps in this election, you will see a decrease in spending Democrats in Congress with a new fiscal policy to drive the country. Hard decisions will need to be made in Washington and whomever is elected will have to make difficult decisions to overcome the previous failures from both parties. You libbies should have a field day in your critical comments.
Man some of you guys went off topic quicker than romney fails to answer questions directly.
I look at the whois whole political BS as a failure and waste of money. Romney has no idea what the 99% are about--daddy but he does not! Yet none of these candidates are FIT or PROFESSIONAL enough to be the President of the US of A.
Romney thinks he can buy it, just has he has bought everything. HE truely doesn't have a clue of life outside the preppies circle for the rest are beneath him in his blinded eyes. He is a representative of what America was like in the 1950's-----wea;th social ladders, golf clubs, bets and deals as the wheel turned for his Daddy's money provided such. But this is 60 years later, the wealth is gone for the majority and strongly held among Romney's favoriite minority as if we the 99% were beneath him!
Therefore Mr. Romney open your accounts to public audit by Deloitte and Touche----2 person team 1 democrat, 1 republican and then the citizens can determine who is the most fit to run this country.
Seeing how Republicans have treated, and want to continue to treat human beings, over the past 3 years... I will take the polar bear.
I'll be interested in seeing Madison's response, David Walker. I'm more of your opinion than not, that much of the anti-Obama rhetoric is based upon poorly vetted rumors. But I'm always willing to listen (or read) and learn.
Winemaker,
You are aware that the Koch brothers funded a study to disprove global warming, right? You know, those guys that you drop to your knees and worship each night as you watch Fox News... ya, those guys. Well they threw MILLIONS at scientists with the sole intention to disprove global warming... literally, millions spent.
Guess what these scientists discovered... guess what the scientists, who were PAID to disprove it, discovered. Go on... guess.
Remember, this is from YOUR party. The people YOU vote for... the people YOU support... this is THEIR report. Not a liberal spin, not liberal lies. This is a GOP / Koch funded study... again, YOUR party.
What do you think YOUR party discovered? Come on, I want to hear your guess.
jolly old soul and winemaker:
As a matter of fact, I was elected from one of the most conservative water districts in the state. (You could look that up.) That's where I discovered that alleged "conservatives" spend like drunks. Winemaker, you and jolly old soul could have checked to see if I was ever elected to statewide office, couldn't you? That's like work though, isn't it?
jollyoldsoul:
I don't have to show how utterly ignorant you are, when you seem bent on advertising that fact. Here's your quote:
Why coitanly. How could a person be more vulnerable than being asked to prove what he said? And my heart goes out to your director friend who couldn't control the union workers under his - no doubt - brilliant command. Hired at 130K and he earns more at a staffing agency? Am I the only one who finds that hard to believe?
Show me where I said I worked for the State of California. Show me, or is that one of those facts that's going to expose your vulnerability? It ain't there pal. This is just another example of the right-wing conclusion-jumping at which you and your kind are so adept. If you're going to get into a battle of wits, don't come half-armed.
Winemaker:
I note you did your basic right-wing shuffle. Is someone an "environmentalist" because he demonstrates concern that the Delta Smelt is being sacrificed for profits? Maybe they're pro-life. Don't labels get to be such a pain in the posterior?
The farmers are not paying for the true cost of their water. That's a fact, unless of course the infrastructure that makes delivery of the water possible is free. Did I miss something there?
The loss of hydraulic pressure is the reason behind the loss of artesian wells. That is caused by overdraft and has little to do with global warming. Don't play BS games with me.
About your clever little quote. Everything grows where water flows, that includes cities, the bank accounts of rapacious developers, and the indispensable boutique vintner.
About that petition you want to sign. The reason California is in its current financial mess is, in the main, the result of a petition that was voted into law. Perhaps you know it - Proposition 13. That is the reason for the political stalemate, but I'm sure you already know that, you fiscal conservative, you!
Hard decisions in Washington? You mean like unfunded tax cuts? Like unfunded prescription benefits. Like foreign invasions. Stop with the silliness. What are libbies?
Here's a note to OBAMA SUPPORTERS.
you're all very naive. The US is spending 8 BILLION dollars a WEEK just to cover the INTEREST on our national debt. Obama doesn't want to cut ANYTHING! Actually, other than RON PAUL, none of the republicans want to cut much of anything. WHEN do all of the geniuses on this site think we should start cutting some stuff before we are completely BANKRUPT? actually, we are completely bankrupt already. 15.2 trillion and counting. IF we get another big spender in office, we're honestly doomed.
RON PAUL 2012
True Partiot and David Walker: Flash back from the movie Forrest Gump:
Forrest: Momma, people call me stupid.
Momma: Stupid is as stupid does.
With that said no amount of regulations and laws can fix stupid. These regulations and laws only cost businesses when they have to slap warnings all over their products for the stupid. Let the stupid win the next Darwin Award.
As momma said "Stupid is as stupid does" and Forrest was not stupid, maybe slow, but not stupid. His momma raised him well. People of the USA could learn alot by not acting stupid!
David,
I will begin by stating I am voting Obama. However, you state that increase regulations and the cost associated with them are not proof of job losses. From a basic economic standpoint any increase in costs, increase in regulations has a direct effect in demand for goods. When demand for goods goes down (which it does with most goods depending on elasticity) it seems reasonable that the number of employees needed would go down. However, I do agree that most of the regulations listed above are needed regulations, but their are always side effects.
So ALL regulations are there to prevent stupid people from harming themselves?
That means that clean air regulation is only there to protect "stupid" people who breathe polluted air. I suppose all the smart people realize when the air is polluted, and just stop breathing.
And where is all the Republican outcry against the FCC regulations that prevent "bad words" from being spoken on the airways? Shouldn't people be "smart" enough to change the channel, and not expect the government to babysit their children? Oh that's right, when it comes to being responsible for YOUR OWN damn children, you Republicans accept government "babysitting" regulations with open arms. God forbid a Republican be responsible for the creatures they create.
Let's be honest... you LOVE more regulations from YOUR party, and are against regulations from the other party.
Still, the Democrats are afraid of Romney. If Obama can beat him as they say, they would welcome him to go against Obama.
Obama offered to put social security and medicare on the chopping block last summer. He was seriously willing to compromise...The great liberal ideal. These cuts, were worth 1 trillion. The GOP had to raise revenues the same.. The GOP said, no deal my way or the highway. Obama was willing to compromise but the Tea Party/GOP don't want compromise. They want to take us back to the 1800's.The People like their Social Security and madicare.t.
I'm tired of all this "regulations kill jobs" and "destroy the EPA" stuff. Let me lay down some facts for you:
EPA: The EPA manages environmental decisions all over the US. Yes, it can be at times destructive, and yes some regulations need to be reviewed and redone, but it works to keep our air clean, our waters pure of waste, and our natural parks and ecosystems normal. I'm an advocate for business. I like a strong industry, economy, etc. But damaging the environment can be detrimental to a nation economically. Health costs could soar if regulations that try to keep our air and water clean are repealed. Aquifers could be polluted and skies blackened with industrial soot, poisoning crops and decreasing agricultural output. If people are getting sick and food production is going down, that is definitely going to hurt our economy. Animals in ecosystems are not an immediate supporter of our economy, but doing away with certain species can mess up the food ecosystem and possible sabotage areas critical for local economies, like fisheries and tourist areas.
As for regulations, I am not a small business owner, but regulations in this country are what I call adequate. On some things, like financial and housing markets, I would favor more strict regulations. On some things like oil drilling offshore and red tape for construction projects, I say review and try to condense. And other stuff, like air quality and water purity, I say keep them. We need to see which regulations are necessary and which are needed.
Obama Biden 2012
Glass Steagall 2012
Someone challenged a "right winger" to list a policy of Obama that is causing job loss. Well, let's take a look at how a couple big ones have NOT created jobs as they were promised.
1) Obamacare. Nancy Pelosi said it's passage would "instantly" create 400,000 jobs.
2) 2009 Stimulus Bill. Joe Biden said it would "save and create jobs."
Of those two, no credible and factual benchmark has ever been given to prove their promise fulfillment. Of course we could really peel the onion back on just those two and show how Obamacare as ALREADY caused worker health insurance premiums to go up, and has not created "shovel ready jobs" as even Obama himself stated (and then laughed about it like a joke).
In fact, when Obama took office in January 2009, there were over 133 million jobs. As of December 2011, nearly three years into ALL those government "job creation" promises at taxpayer expense under Obama's watch, there were 131.9 million (non-farm) jobs (data taken from BLS website - http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nQP6rYNyLO8/TwfliSI-7TI/AAAAAAAACcU/eQU1jxkLdk0/s1600/Total+Nonfarm+2001-2011.JPG).
So clearly, SOMETHING is causing those job losses, and I note that Bush is no longer in office and Democrats still control 2/3 of Washington between the White House and the Senate with the Republicans controlling 58% of the House for the remaining 1/3 power.
But in case anyone is really curious about Obama policies (and Democrat policies) killing jobs, well here's just a tip of the iceburg with Exhibit A:
http://dailycaller.com/2011/12/05/obamacares-21-tax-hikes-are-killing-jobs/
And then there's the Caterpillar factory moving to China exhibit B...
http://thecynicaleconomist.com/2010/09/29/caterpillar-to-open-a-plant-in-china-wtf-i-thought-they-would-create-jobs-here-as-obama-promised/
Oh yeah and that oil pipeline from Canada program that he punted on so as not to tick off this environmental votes while we all bend over at the gas pumps? Killing coal job losses while we watch our utility bills skyrocket? Signing idiotic bank legislation like the Durbin bill which limits Visa/Mastercard fee rates per transaction causing all of US to suffer more? REALLY? You people want four more years of Obama? I don't think so. The majority of America doesn't think so either. We need to get a person in office again with a CLUE on how America operates as a nation that's 70% consumer driven. Romney while liberal on social issues will get the job done just fine. Send all the Chicago crony hacks back to where they came from!
WHERE ARE THE IDEAS???????? WHERE ARE THE BALANCED PROPOSALS?????? WHY ARE YOU JUST CRITICIZING THE PRESIDENT?????? Play the man, Romney. Not the boy. Stop the criticism and actually OFFER ideas. I like how he is optimistic, but all he does is shoot at the president. He says that the economy is still in the mud. Yes, but we are recovering. Many jobs are low-wage, but some well-paying jobs are coming, namely manufacturing. Not a lot, but a steady amount. Unemployment is going down. Not fast, but still falling. He says that he'll cut the debt. But then again, he'd have to raise it at least once in his presidency. In addition, he does not want to increase taxes ON ANYONE?? How the hell is anyone gonna cut the debt without raising taxes, or at least reforming the tax code to raise revenues?? He wants to LOWER rates, and wants to make the Bush cuts PERMANENT. That will cost us over $3-4 trillion over ten years, plus additional deficits. And even worse, he won't even touch defense. In fact, he'll expand it. I am not libertarian, but I am concerned with the Military-Industrial Complex and how the defense budget is causing our deficits. I want a strong military too, a pretty strong military. In fact, I disagree with Founding Fathers who advocated a tiny military. But when budgets go red, we gotta target spending that is out of control, including defense. The guy is also critical of the rest of the world (particularly Europe, whose socialism does some things better than us and some things worse) except Israel. I like Israel, but I don't think that the most powerful nation in the world should be kissing Israel's feet. We as a sovereign nation have the right to have some disputes with allies, while keeping our relations cordial. Frankly, I think Romney is talking good, but his ideas will do nothing. Cutting regulations is BS. Some need to be reviewed, but if he repeals Dodd-Frank and replace it with nothing I will egg him like they do to politicians in Europe.
Obama Biden 2012
Democrat Congress 2012
America 2012
@ David Walker
You seem to want to ignore all the facts, like government is not corrupt! Under Obama the US is adding over $1 Trillion a year to the Federal Debt, corruption is everywhere, unemployment is running 15% to 17% (U-6), medicare fraud, medical fraud, bailout banks, bailout wall street, give tax payers money to those that donated to the Obama campaign, entitle those that do not want to work to a point where they have a choice, work, or live off the tax payer (making cash under the table)
Neither party offers solutions, and the direction America is headed under Obama, there is no out. Do the math, look at the projected debt under Obama! Government is not a solution, government is the problem. Government does not create jobs, government regulates jobs!
I do own my own business, open 365 days a year, 24/7 and we in Alaska can not get the corrupt government employees to function in my borough, as expected. These leaches are too busy taking their paid holidays, collecting their "government packages" and milking the system, as they have nothing invested in the system, nothing to lose!
http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2010/10/red-tape-rising-obamas-torrent-of-new-regulation
True Patriot, Great Posts!
It amazes me that there are so many people that support the economic policies of the GOP.
The GOP's failed financial platforms caused America's economic collapse. natemsis may be doing financial well now. However, I feel comfortable in saying that he probably is not part of the 1%. The 1% do not need to go online to post their support of the corruption in Wall Street and Corporate America - that bankrupted America. These "by the few, for the few" folks do their "arm twisting" behind closed doors and on private phone lines.
If the 1% is successful in its drive to continue to have an American corporacacy and smash democacy in America, natemesis, will not be left with chamber pot and a window to throw its contents out of.
I'd say the Democrats, and most particularly Barrack Obama, are less disdainful of Romney than they are of the remain pack of half-mad and half-stupid ideologues running for the nomination.
Romney, at least, has a shot. If the economy has taken a downturn this summer, or if a pack of terrorists have flown a plane into the Sear Tower in Chicago, then Obama is in trouble. But barring such catastrophes, Obama wins in a walk against any of the probable, or improbable, candidates:
Romney: presided over the same damn health care reform that has conservatives, and even many moderates, frothing at the mouth.
Gingrich: Known for his blazing intellect, he puts his foot in his mouth more often than the town drunk, and how did Mr. Genius fail to get his name on the ballot for the Virginia Primary. If you can't run a campaign, why would you think you could run the country?
Rick Santorum: is very hot about various social issues, such as Gay Marriage, which most voters simply do not care about.
Ron Paul: likable guy. Always speaks his minds ...and scares the life out of half the voters. Not even he sees himself in the Oval Office.
Jon Huntsman: Sort of Romney's doppelganger. They even share the same faith and have great hair. But he's been campaigning in NH for the last 2 months and still would have trouble be noticed if he walked through downtown Manchester stark naked.
Rick Perry - just needs to go home, even he has, finally memorized the three federal departments he would eliminate [way to go!].
So go ahead and tell me who is the biggest threat to Obama. I'm sure Obama would like to know too.
Umm, Mt. Mike, we all know that there is fraud in the federal government. And using a site from the Heritage Foundation (a conservative think tank) doesn't help your theory, especially on an MSNBC news thread. Plus ANYBODY would be adding $1 trillion a year, especially with the recession decreasing revenue and increasing spending on top of Bush's deficits. And didn't Obama already offer a plan to cut the deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years. But the Tea Party said no. Obama tried. Hopefully, if he gets re-elected and gets a Democrat-run Congress we MIGHT get something done about our debt. Look at this proposal http://grijalva.house.gov/uploads/The_CPC_FY2012_Budget.pdf It would be great to decrease our debt WHILE repairing our economy.
The biggest story of all is not Romney winning in Iowa and NH but, the biggest story is the fact that the American Citizen's mindset is shifting toward the RON PAUL THOUGHT PROCESS.
We are For A Man Right to Choose For SElF.
We Are For Freedom!!!!
We are For Fairness!!!!
We are For What the Forefathers wanted minus the slaves and master mentality.
We are for Harmony and being an example to the rest of the world by leading with high ethical standars.
These things have been hijacked by Government officials who sold us out to the highest bidder for the sake of greed.
WE WANT OUR RIGHT AND INDIVIDUAL POWER BACK!!!!
We as good ethical citizens should not have to first be afraid of the police because we are living right but not by greedy politicians and court standards!!!!
After watching the latest Republican debate with my teenage daughter (who is taking an American Government course in high school), I had a hard time justifying to her what is passing as rational debate and explaining these nominees who claim to have the interest of our country in mind. The half truths and outright lies were to too many to keep up with.
I try to encourage her to keep an open mind, but if those people on the stage that night think they are the solution to what is wrong with this country, I fear for not just my future, but that of my children. But what bothers me most is the thinly-veiled racism and blatant homophobia of the GOP. As a parent who is trying to teach not just tolerance, but understanding of all races and people, I find the rhetoric coming from the Republican party hard to listen to.
Well said DVNYC
I agree with you DVNYC. Ron Paul has it right when he says that we have to stop looking at people as groups, but rather as individuals. That way, people will stop with the stereotypes and marginalization that goes on in our country. As for the rest of the Republican Candidates, it is shameful how bigoted they are.
@DVNYC:
I agree that the debates - whether among members of either party or between the two reigning parties - are a poor showing of a real debate between people who have the best interests of our country in mind. This is due mostly to the fact that the Reps and Dems have both become so entrenched and powerful that the members of the party no longer truly represent the interests of the people, but rather are simply focussed only on the interests of the party itself.
The bottom line is that the Democrats and Republicans have been in power in this country far too long and have become far too powerful as a result. This excessive power and overentrenchment of the Reps and Dems is due in large part to the campaign finance system and balloting rules that these parties have installed for themselves, which 1) keeps these parties in power longer than they should be (based on history, these two parties should have fallen from favor over 50 years ago), 2) ensures that no third party can ever become a legitimate option (despite the fact that nearly 1/3 of Americans are Independents, over 99% of our elected representatives are Republican or Democrat), and 3) causes elected representatives to focus only on the needs and desires of the party with which they affiliate and the few large organizational contributors to those parties, so that the representative can ensure that he or she has sufficient funding for the next reelection campaign. And as the Republicans and Democrats have become increasingly powerful and entrenched, they have moved increasingly far from the center such that they are now diametrically opposed on essentially every issue. Because most Americans actually reside rather close to the center, this forces Americans to simply vote for the candidate that they dislike the least as opposed to the candidate that they actually feel represents their interests and ideals.
This is not how a democracy is supposed to operate! Our representatives are supposed to focus on the needs of their constituents and not the party itself. I encourage everyone to check out the American Overhaul Act at www.americanoverhaulact.org, which proposes a set of Constitutional amendments designed to correct the systemic deficiencies that are allowing these problems to persist. The Act is focused on six areas of concern: Federal Election Campaign Reform, Elimination of Party Favoritism, Congressional Compensation Limits, Congressional Term Limits, Congressional Size Limits, and Federal Budget-Deficit Reform. Please check it out, and, if you agree with the proposals, show your support for the Act, and also share it with your friends and family so that we may continue to gain the support needed to cause our government officials to take notice of this Act.
Ironic that you mention Ron Paul considering the racist articles in the newsletters.
His explanation that he didn't know about them doesn't ring true at all.
Well said.....
I guess you don't have any examples. Just vague accusations. Typical Liberal BS....looks like your daughter is well on her way to being indoctrinated.
Dvnyc sorry to say this but I am a school professor and I have taught all over the world and by far the American kids are the dumbest I have ever met....so I will not put too much on your daughter she may be bright and you sound like a suppotive dad but our current Potus is the worst, look at his record he charmed his way in and a lot of minority folks voted for him but this is the reason we should vote on reason and intelligence and not race and emotions cause he is a dismal failure and needs to go and anyone of the Republicians except Perry would wipe the floor wirh him.
Just wanted to insert some facts--Federal government employment will top 2.15 million employees in 2011, the first time it has exceeded 2 million since Clinton declared the era of big government is over. Federal government employment and spending growth is out of control. "independent" is right, the current president is the absolute worst we have every had. Health Care regulations, Dodd Frank regulations, many environmental regulations that have been added without congressional oversight have killed jobs, if they don't kill them directly they kill them indirectly by creating an atomsphere that makes businesses unwilling to take on the risk of adding employees. Obama can't make hard decisions, he cant even make easy ones like approving the Canadian Pipeline. We need someone in the white house who has demonstrated the ability to make hard decisions, to lay people off when necessary in order to turn businesses around and to take on the bureaucrats who think they should be in charge of running this country's economy.
I think it's ridiculous how we decide who will be the best president. We have some dumb debates where the candidates first pander to what Iowan's might like. Then we have TV adds that tell half truths or half lies depending on if they're making the candidate look good or bad. Then every president realizes once they're in office they can't accomplish what they thought they could and changes their policies.
Call me when we're a part of the Federation.
Wy would any one vote for a two faced man for. Romney will sale us all out. Please people Vote for Ron. I hear people are scared that Ron cant beat obama. I say my Dog could beat obama at this point and time. All Noboma has done is turn our great white house into a fairy tail place for his kids. With way to many vactions on our dime. Ron said he would even take a pay cutt if elected. Ron is the only one smart enough to get this country out this mess its in. If you love your Nation vote Ron Paul 2012
Overhaul America: Thanks for putting it so succinctly. I couldn't have said it better myself!! The problem with the debates is that rather than talking about what they would do to fix the problems....they are focused on what they can do to topple the other candidates. I don't care what they think about their fellow candidates or what they think about the job President Obama is doing. I want to know what they intend to do that will fix the problems and if their solutions would REALLY work. Since they can't seem to come up with answers to those questions, they waste everyone's time in these debates! It's ridiculous and non-productive to say the least!
Is hard money better than small money?? Or couldn't we have a flexible currency like during Bretton Woods?? I mean, I'm scared that maybe Ron Paul is right. I don't like his policies, but maybe what he's saying (gold-standard=good, dollar and debt bubble, etc) might be true. I don't want to go back to gold 100%, but maybe we could align it just a little bit to secure our economy. Does anybody have any info and evidence to argue for or against my case???
There's nothing greater in this world than voting for a............. you fill in the blank.
conservative.
Diamond60 - sorry - still laughing!
It will be Romney, and anyone who didn't realize this months ago is a little dim. It wouldn't matter who it is, even if you threw in Queen Lipstick and Hair Boy Trump. This class of clowns are all talk and no show. Obama 2012.
All I can say is if Mitt Yawnie gets the nomination; then South Park will have put it best. This would truly be a vote between a giant douche and a turd sandwitch.... It's elections like that which would leave me wanting a viable 3rd candidate, and a break from the current 2 party system....
A Mutt: does not know what he is, nor does anyone elsel
Oh, don't waste a vote on Paul either, he won't last one term.
Emil
Any photo ops at Fort Sumter? It might be nice to have an historical visual for the -- as the article terms it -- "fratricidal warfare" of the Uncivil War roadshow as it kicks off its invasion of the South.
I can understand the appeal of Romney. He is re-running Obama's campaign from '08 (& it worked for Obama, didn't it?) Romney has just swapped out Obama's name for Bush. Romney is constantly attacking Obama, not because he is the "front-runner," but because there is very little substantive differences between the two of them when it comes to policy. It is hard work trying to create contrasts where none exist. Ron Paul 2012!
The difference is that Romney doesn't come across as a man of substance and reflection like Obama does.
Ron Paul is sadly a senile old coot. And a racist to boot, considering the articles in his newsletter.
You are so wrong here it is incredible the ignorance spewing from your mind. There are so many differences that I could be here all day trying to explain them to a nutcase groupy.
I had at least a modicum of respect for Ron Paul until I saw him posing with the webmaster of Stormfront.org, Don Black. This is a KKK, neo-Nazi white supremacist organization. If you have any doubts, google Don Black Ron Paul for images. You'll see him with Don and his son, smiling broadly.
Then browse Stormfront.org until your stomach starts to turn.
Ron Paul ISN'T racist. He did say at some point that if a white supremacist wants to donate to him, he'd simply take the money and use it for a good, anti-racist cause.
Oh, and check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CoQWAXuUyI
How bias is this @!$%#ie MSNBC news. It's ridiculous, to think that people believe in this fairytales...
Romney's Bain Capital background is EXCELLENT we NEED somebody who will fire HALF the Washington bureaucrats.
good luck running a country of 300,000 million with a few people. when that happens they call it a dictatorship
Madison! I am still waiting for one regulation that Obama has passed that is killing our economy. If you can't come up with one, then you are thr typical GOP sheep who watched way too much of The Fox Fiction channel.
What makes you think Romney has the ability to fire anyone in Washington? You prove that we have much more of a society problem than any kind of Government problem. You are so minsinformed, as are so many other fools that you could be convinced the world is flat
Madison---think David Walker is still waiting for the 100,000 beuracrat figure from you. I m sure you have the facts and figures
MAdison Still waiting for that job killing regulation? Have you found one yet? Just asking?
You're kidding right? Any time you create regulation that costs businesses money (and especially when it's tied directly to payroll) you taking away money that could be used to expand and hire more workers. The biggest job killing piece of legislation in the last 50 years is that health care bill. No you might argue that the benefits outweight the cost, but I don't think so personally.
Madison - Come on, this is easy.. If there is a regulation that kills jobs provide it. And provide the names of those $100,000 bureaucrats. This is your chance to stick it to the Democrats.. Come on, I'm waiting..
Adam - I've worked in the private industry for 37 years, managing one end of the operation of a fortune 500 company and not once have I ever seen a regulation that stopped us from hiring. Not once. It just doesn't happen in the real world. We hire based on demand (new business) and revenues..plain and simple.
The company I worked for provided health care to it's employees. The new health care law does nothing to us...nothing, we already meet the provisions of the law. The health care law imposes on those that for whatever reason don't want to have medical coverage and expect someone like me to foot the bill. The whole health care bill has it's roots in the Hertiage Foundation, a extreme right wing think tank. When they proposed in it was OK, when a Democrat does it, worst thing on earth..
You need to do better........
Madison is really a paid troll who works for Bain Capital.
As aposed to working for soros?
Eric Cantor has listed just SOME of Obama's job killing regulations.
http://majorityleader.gov/blog/2011/08/memo-on-upcoming-jobs-agenda.html
Of course, all House job creation legislation to override these regulations have been QUASHED by "the party of no" Senate Democrats who after all control the upper chamber along with the imperial Obama Presidency.
http://pjmedia.com/tatler/2011/08/29/cantor-lists-assails-obamas-top-10-job-destroying-regulations/
Got to keep those campaign contributions coming in from the Lefitst idealogues so Michelle can keep buying those Manolo Blahniks while vacationing in Martha's Vinyard/ Hawaii at elite mansions and attending $47,500.00 per plate Wall Street/ Hollywood fundraisers.
Romney would fire the DC bureaucrats but then hire people in Asia to do their jobs.
Madison, a list from Eric Cantor? You're kidding, right? You've given us a list, with vague acronyms. But still no job loss figures to accompany any of your points. Or any indication of how jobs were affected.
Many of these appear to relate to environmental concerns. I happen to WANT to breathe clean air. Do you not?
If people and businesses could behave like ladies and gentlemen, we would not need regulations. People and businesses cannot do this, so we have to look after our health and environment.
The EPA wants to prohibit farmers from producing "farm dust."
HELLO? When you drive your tractor/ horse in a field it makes dust. Has done so for thousands of years.
The only way to farm with lower dust levels is spend BILLIONS on stupid water tanks that spray water from the backs of tractors made by Obama's CAMPAIGN BUNDLERS AND CONTRIBUTERS (see Solyendra, GM Unions) and which have no practical positive impact on the environment. Rotating crops is more important and the farmers already know about that (see Dust Bowl).
Those EPA idiots obviously never worked for a living, certainly not on a farm.
The EPA Leftists are OUT OF CONTROL! Just like the rest of Team Obama: Power Freaks who want to control the very dirt you walk on.
Congress needs to GO TEA PARTY PATRIOT and SHUT DOWN THE EPA and LEAVE LAW MAKING TO CONGRESS, AND ENFORCEMENT of CLEAR AND SPECIFIC LAWS to THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH. End Federal Agency centralized command and control PROVEN TO NOT WORK in Greece, Italy, Soviet Union, Cuba, Detroit, California, now America under Obama just to name a few.
Madison, I told you what would happen. Dont worry about it state your opinion and let it go.
Knowing his record, he'd fire the people on payroll, BUT there really isn't a way to fire Congress. Without firing the politicians, not much good comes of it. But then again in the corporate world, sometimes it's members of the C's club (aka upper maneagement) who should be fired, rather then the lowlie work ther.e But then we all know how this goes; because with all the mis-steps Bank of America has made, who's getting the pink slips, vs who's getting the bonuses. If anything, the one who orchestrated the Countrywide and the Merill Lynch mergers SHOULD be the first up for firing; rather then the 30k branch employees.
But then again, maybe he could convince some from Capitol Hill to resign, if he opens his mouth and bores the room half to death. People might quite, after being droned to sleep by his voice, and then wake up to realize they don't want to have to take the number of caffine pills which would be necessary to stay awake during one of his speeches anymore.
Okay, if they ban farm dust then I will think than that is insane, but other than that I think that regulating our air and water is an acceptable reason for instituting a regulation. And Madison, please stop spewing right wing BS and use facts from an UNBIASED source. It's like asking a liberal (like me) to point out the problems that Al Sharpton has against Romney, or asking a Ron Paul supporter to say that Ron Paul has radical ideas.
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
DEMOCRAT CONGRESS 2012
The danger for Mitt right now is that he is becoming a caricature of himself. With his little fibs about working his way up in business and attacking Huntsman for serving his country puts his smarmy, self righteous style at risk of looking dishonest and hypocritical. Add all the blog jokes about tieing his dog to the top of a vehicle for a twelve hour drive makes him look foolish. Once a politician s veneer starts to come off, it can be hard to glue it back.
If you have not seen the real passion behind the man and just see the little fibs you are looking at the wrong things
mittens is the Yoshime Sam of the Republican field- just wait and the dynimite will go off eventually- "corporations are people too, my friend", or " I'll bet you $10,000....", or "I just love firing ......"
Obama/Biden 2012
Did you know Ron Paul has never voted for a tax increase of an unbalanced Budget.
Did you know that in his 20+ years in congress he's never authored or passed a bill, because none of his ideas pass mustard. Not once mind you....
Plus, Ron Paul's newsletters reveal him to be an utter racist and homophobe.
Except the newsletters were written by someone else and Paul had no idea what was being written.
Hey Bart, I read the actual newsletter copy. Did you? Context is everything. The newsletter referenced the government coverup of intentional infection of a large number of people by infected homosexuals. Why? Don't know, but a very recent news story about this actual act within the past two weeks should be required reading for you. Look it up.
Also, his racism charge stems from his belief that parts of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should not be law. Read the Act. You just might agree.
Whomever VOTES for these IMBECILES is ether an IMBECILE THEMSELVES or FULL BLOWN DELUSIONAL !!
CHECK THEIR BACKGROUND you may find it surprising !!!!!!
You mean like Obama's background?
Obama's background is just fine. Plus, he now has 4 years of being president to add to the resume.
The day he "BELIEVES IN AMERICA" is the day I believe "I AM AS RICH AS HIM" and I know it is going the reverse. Because of his kind and Rhetoric.
can one of you guys really believe it is in our interest to elect Crassus(Mitt). study history and if you find a man who has not ulterior motive(money, power) then you have missed the signs. trust me Patriotism is the refuge of a scoundrel and we will rue the day he is nominated as the Republican standard bearer.
Just tell me one thing thsi man stands for in an era that needs bold thinking and action. not once in his entire history has he been that.
Reminds me of Obama. . .
This entire GOP field is the worst ever assembled. George Bush is 10 times better than these guys and he is considered the worst ever. Way to go republicans for wanting to regress. No wonder you hate the term progress
Agree with everybody except Madison!!! If Madison something useful to add to the debate besides rhetoric and silly conclusions giving to her by the right I could see if I can agree with her too.
I read the Wall Street Journal article regarding Bain Capital's performance. I couldnt help but notice the large profits that Bain enjoyed during those disastrous pre-Bush tax cuts. The performance of Bain supports Warren Buffets assertion that tax rates never stopped him from making an investment. If Bain, saw an opportunity they invested and it was during, eek, a period when there was a liberal democrat in the White House. I believe the stats were that approximately 77% of the total amount Bain made was on 10 deals, and all of these deals were in the 90's. I believe Bain is still in existence and I'll bet they are continuing to pursue deals despite the "uncertainty" associated with our current administration. The republican message is nothing more than fear-mongering, which has more to do with the hesitancy in the markets as anything
I can not wait for the Mormon Bishop to tell us how it is not a Theocracy with him in office?
You don't need the "Mormon Bishop" to tell you that. The 1st Amendment does it.
Just like we were not a "Theocracy" when JFK was president.
Is Romney a practicing Mormon or not, is he a liar about his faith like obama or not.
The law of chastity of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) states that any form of immoral conduct or relationships as well as any sexual or lewd conduct outside the bonds of marriage is prohibited.[1] Violating the Law of Chastity may result in excommunication. Included within the definition and boundaries of this statement is homosexual behavior. Members of the church who self-identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual may remain in good standing in the church if they abstain from homosexual relations and heterosexual relations outside of marriage; this includes avoiding impure thoughts and sexual fantasies.[2][3] The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints permits all people to attend its local Sunday services.[4] Acquiring and maintaining membership in the church, and receiving a temple recommend, is dependent upon the personal observance of its teachings, including the law of chastity.[5][6]
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints historically taught that the practice of homosexuality, meaning sexual behavior with someone of the same sex,[7] was a choice or curable mental illness.[8] Recent leadership has indicated that it may not be a conscious choice and that it may be treatable.[9] The church teaches that regardless of the cause of same sex attraction, one can and must avoid all immoral relationships, including homosexual relations.[2][10]
The church opposes and campaigns against government recognition of same-sex marriage, believing it would undermine church doctrine and teachings regarding marriage and the family.[11] The issue of same-sex marriage has in recent years become one of the church’s foremost political concerns with church members contributing as much as 50% of the campaign funds to California Proposition 8 (2008).[12] The LDS Church supported a Salt Lake City ordinance protecting members of the LGBT community against discrimination in employment and housing while allowing religious institutions to consider lifestyles in actions such as hiring or providing university accommodations, while at the same time reaffirming that it remained "unequivocally committed to defending the bedrock foundation of marriage between a man and a woman."[13]
Life is sacred. We are commanded not to "kill, nor do anything like unto it" (Doctrine and Covenants 59:6). To kill an unborn child for the convenience of the parents is a sin that will bring great regret. To those who are unable to raise a child properly, adoption is a wonderful alternative that should be considered.
How can a man who practices his religion and not live his religion be anything but a liar, Romney which are you, I guess we will have to wait and see if and when you are elected, there can be no seperation of religion and state. You are either for God or against God, if you believe in God then you will obey his commandents of which the United States was founded on, and all those who say that is not the case is ignorant of the constitution and has never read it.
Did you know that Ron Paul made all of the doctors at his practice
1) agree to never do an abortion while there,
2) treat and medicaid patients at 0 cost. And did not Bill the Medicare system
He also believes 9-11 was and inside job...and to believe that he has to believe the GOP blew up the two towers and the Pentagon. Really?
He also believes we should repeal the Civil Rights Act of 1964...
He believes Social Security is unconstitutional as is Medicare and should be done away with.
He believes the Govt shouldn't provide Federal Assistance in Emergencies, say Hurricanes.
He also believes doctors and businesses should be able to deny services to people based on race or religion.
He also believes doctors should take chickens as payment for medical services... in other words, he lives in 1776 ..
While I am not a Ron Paul supporter, I do have to call on you libtards when I see a lie.
Paul NEVER said 911 was an inside job. What he said was our forign policy caused 911 because of our support for dictators. And as far as the GOP being responsible for the 2 towers and the pentagon, you really should have also added the DNC to that since both paries support dictators in the mid east
No. He beleives that the "Civil Rights Act of 1964" should have been done as an amendment to the constituion instead of a law. It is harder to repeal an amendment then a law. To repeal a law they only need a sinple majority where they would need 2/3 of congress/senate and the states to ratify it
They are unconstitutional for the federal government. This is something the states can and should be doing. If you think they are not unconstitutional, show me in the US Constitution where the federal government gets this power.
No he does not. But he beleives that the states under the 10th amendment should be the preimary source responsible
I have never heard him EVER say this garbage. But I don't listen to him that often
Did you know it's that would be called "bartering". I see nothing wrong with it.
Are you one of those libtards that think the US Constitution is just to old? As you libtards say, "It is over 100 years old". What an ignorant tool you are.
sonmanub- and calling names is so intelligent - NOT!
Lmao.......have you read the previous posts! Its ok for liberals to be nasty and call names......no one else!
I think the liberals are worried because they know Ron Paul is the only candidate who can beat Obama.
This guy is the "Panderer-in-Chief". Nice haircut, though.
Mittens. The gift that keeps on giving. The REAL question is whether or not Southern Baptists and Bible Belt evangelicals will turn out in great numbers come November to vote for a Yankee Mormon? I think not.
Well Mittens might get the Utah vote.... But others might really wonder just how much of the Mormon president he could end up being. He might well end up having to do what JFK did, when he mentioned that he happens to be a Catholic who is RUNNING for President; but he won't be the Catholic President who would defer to the pope. Though there are some evangelicals (which is not everyone), Mormon ideology is a little different, aka the story about BYU and a athelete comming into question; many did find it hard to identify with Mormon values in such regard... And for others it would be his record working at a house of pancakes that offer flip flops....
After Utah went all fanatical in banning daily drink specials; the rest of us might really wonder if we want the Mormon way of life shoved down our throats. I'm sorry, but even among Christians; there's something about Mormon principles that they might find a bit out of the mainstream. Utah's new law being a perfect example of this.
Yes, please clear the road for Mit to go down in defeat harder than that senile fart John McSame.
If I was filthy rich I sure would vote for Mr. Romney to protect my interests, and my tax cuts.
Mitt Romney - I like to fire people.. And he's made a living doing so....
Madison was called out and was shown to be lacking. That is my take-away from this article. Keep after them David... eventually they will all show their true colors.
They have beaten up Romney because he said " he likes to fire people" which was taken out of context. He meant that he wants to have the option to take his business elsewhere when he is unhappy with a service. That's how we all feel. We go where we think we get the best service for our money. In other words , we "fire" those we feel don't do the proper job.
When asked about it, Gingrich had the decency and honesty to say there is nothing wrong with what Romney said because he knows what Romney meant and that it was taken out of context.
When Huntsman was asked, he said YES, Romney likes to fire people.
I dont trust Huntsman based on that comment. That is very dishonest of him. We know Huntsman wants to win but now we see he is willing to say anything to get there. He acts like a dishonest Democrat....... You know , the type OF FIBBING POLITICIAN that says....... " We will create jobs if you give us $780 billion dollars " (stimulus 1).
LEONA - When you work for Bain capital, YOU want to fire people.
And maybe you might want to look at when the stimulus took effect and hiring that occured since. I think we have 22 months of job creation, beginning about the time the stimulus went into effect. I think it's over 2 million people..
Don, maybe you want to think about this when you sober up from the kool aid high...
"At the same time, Democrats defend President Obama's record of job creation, saying that the U.S. economy has added more than 3.1 million private sector jobs in the last 22 months. They do not note that 6 million fewer people are participating in the labor force since Obama became president."
"Among 1,000 people who've lost jobs recently are former employees of now-defunct solar power firm Solyndra, a centerpiece of Obama's green jobs program. The U.S. government invested $500 million in the firm before it declared bankruptcy last summer. "
On the subject of the economy.......the Democrats = HYPOCRITES
They have beaten up Romney because he said " he likes to fire people" which was taken out of context.
LOL!!! Yep -- it was "taken out of context". The the fallback position for every politician when they say something stupid. The reality is Romney did create jobs --- minimum wage, part time jobs after he shipped good paying, full time jobs overseas.
Leona Put down that moonshine and back up.
Back up...... Leona your starting to sound stupid Leona ...........Back away
Truth be told, when a business manager says they like firing people; it doesn't, and perhaps shouldn't connect with people in the right way. People get the image of that difficult boss type, who likes to keep a lot of pressure on people as he's ready to scream his head off and "your fired"....
Which conjures up the sense of people who think their bosses are difficult, and on a personal level don't like them. Boards might love them, but employees don't, and when the employees are the voters....
