Obama might be the president but he can do very little without congress backing him up. There are several more Republicans in congress then there are Democrats right now and since congressmen vote how their party wants them to vote the Republicans are in control of Congress. Yes, the president has alot more power than any one legislator in congress but when a single party controls most of Congress they are way more powerful than the president because almost anything the president does has to be okayed by Congress. If you happened to remember around August, September, and October last year the economy started growing, yes very slowly I know, but it was growing. Last year Congress was controlled by Democrats. Then last November when new represenatives and senators were elected the Rebuplicans took over Congress and that's when the economy started to go down again. I hate when people always blame the country's problems on the president and the president's party when they don't even understand how the government works...

Oh, and just to let you know we don't have nearly as many fossil fuels as the entire middle east combined. and if we drilled all of our own oil we wouldn't have enough for even 100 years...

Last time I checked, Congress was split into two individual units, the House AND the Senate. The republicans do control the House and technically the republicans do have more overall members since in the House representatives are based on population vs. the Senate at 2 per state. Explain to me exactly how that puts them in control the Congress? And what exactly is most of Congress? The percentages breakdown to 0%, 50% or 100%. That means either all, none or half. In fact no the majority of Democrats in the House 126 nay 82 yea 60% voted againt GOP 215 to 6. Senate side Democrats 29-21 GOP 48-1. If it was up to Dems we would have never gone to war it would never have gotten out of the House. Within a year and a half the overwhelming number of Dems in both Houses repudiated their votes even though the war went well when it became obvious the proof they had been presented with had not a grain of truth. Why wouldn't the OWS protesters heckle Obama? It's not like he's on the side of the middle class. He's caved to the Republicans and business interests about every chance he gets. On numerous occasions in the last few weeks I've had the opportunity to hear Intelligent OWS organizers debate with Tea Party organizers.

Four times that I can remember.

Each and every time, once they have gone over the details of what they are looking for, they agree 80% on just about everything.

What they vehemently disagree about is the method to get there, the Tea Party is taking the advice which was doled out during the '60's about you have to be in the government to change it, which is what actually happened back then, believe me I was one of those protesters back then. It does work that way.

OWS has the idea, from what they have learned in school that it was the protests themselves that changed everything. It wasn't, the protests were the catalysts of the change, but the change was effected from inside the government process.

Once they learn that what their teachers have taught them is wrong, and they accept the wisdom of the people that have done it before, they WILL join the Tea Party.

This is because they stand for the same things.

I too am a child of the 60s and 70s but I fail to see how a catalyst that brings about change is not responsible for the change. There never was broad or deep support for the war after 1965 from 48% in 65 to the low 30s by 1969. As it became obvious that the majority of Americans did not support the war more legislators were willing to go out on a limb. Nixon got elected by telling America he had a plan for withdrawal and LBJ failed to throw his support behind Humphrey and the violence aat the Democratic Convention. I would contend that the antiwar movement ineffect did bring about the end of the war as did the environmental movement,the civil rights movement and the womens movement. Things didn't change by changing anything inside government the various groups brought enough pressure to force the same cast of characters to change their votes.

I do not have a college degree, fresh out of high school I found myself in southeast asia fighting in a war I had no idea why, I came home and was spit on by college students, I worked hard got married and have been working hard ever since, I do not think anyone owes me anything, I go out and find work and do what is needed to make my life better, I did not come from a rich family, I go out every day and find work, I find some way to make money to support my family.

I'm a liberal and I can tell you exactly what the OWS movement wants in 5 words. An end to corporate greed. It's actually a rather accepted concept throughout the country, at this point. You'd agree that corporations make way too much money, I'm sure, and that they always find loopholes to slip through to avoid paying taxes. This is generally regarded as fact. And it is generally agreed upon by both sides. These corporations then take this money they make and use it to buy politicians, again, both Republican and Democrat. That's issue one, and it explains why OWS has been so reluctant to plead their case to Congress. If Congress is in big business' pockets, and the protest is against big business, it's hard to plead your case.

OWS is also against corporations that were on the verge of bankruptcy who accepted bailout money and then used that money to give their CEOs Christmas bonuses. And then, instead of fixing the problems that resulted from bad business practices, continued on with the same practices and same bad leaders. If you're too big to fail, then you should be too big to accept government bailout money. If you're too big to fail, then you're too big to exist in the first place.

OWS is against the greed of people on Wall Street (Hence the name). I don't know if you know exactly what a Wall Street trader does. Wall Street traders basically take money, invest it in stocks, wait for those stocks to go up in value, and then sell them for a profit. Now that's not a big deal. It's good business sense to do it. Unfortunately, some traders who have been hired by small businesses, the general public, etc. take the money they are given and invest them in stocks that will make the TRADER a profit, rather than the investor. Furthermore, the tendency of some investors is to say "Who cares whether I make a bad financial decision? It's not like it's my money that I'm investing in these bad stocks." The trader gets paid either way. The investor, however, loses money.

Finally, and probably most importantly, OWS is against the greed of banks. Banks issue loans to people who can't afford them, and then foreclose on the person's homes, repossess their cars, and all that wonderful stuff. And what's more, the banks KNOW the person can't afford the loan. And then there's the people who can afford the loan. A person takes a loan out for a $500,000 dollar house, and the bank is OK with giving them a loan. However, when the housing market crashed, that person's house was worth, say, $200,000, instead of the original $500,000. But the loan is still set for $500,000 house. What sense is it to be paying a loan for more than your house is worth? So instead of lowering the loan rate, they keep it the same and you're forced to pay it due to the long term contract you signed.

That's it in a nut shell, and there are other things, but those are the main ones.

On numerous occasions in the last few weeks I've had the opportunity to hear Intelligent OWS organizers debate with Tea Party organizers.

Four times that I can remember.

Each and every time, once they have gone over the details of what they are looking for, they agree 80% on just about everything.

What they vehemently disagree about is the method to get there, the Tea Party is taking the advice which was doled out during the '60's about you have to be in the government to change it, which is what actually happened back then, believe me I was one of those protesters back then. It does work that way.

OWS has the idea, from what they have learned in school that it was the protests themselves that changed everything. It wasn't, the protests were the catalysts of the change, but the change was effected from inside the government process.

I disagree with that. If you look at Obama's record - He tries his best in a bad situation and has made more progress than most modern presidents on a number of issues...

He is consistently winning on the foreign policy front. Taking the fight directly to terrorists, winding down costly, senseless wars, expanding the market for US goods and generally restoring our reputation abroad.

The stimulus absolutely stopped the hemorrhaging of jobs from the economy. many forget now how fast things were spiraling out of control then... look at the graphs of economic growth and job losses and you'll see things level out right after the stimulus is passed. The problem was it wasn't big enough.

All of these problems we face have complicated solutions and no one knows the right answer. What we need is a congress that will work with the president to pass the jobs act, repeal the bush tax cuts and get things going again.

However, this tactic causes CPI (the price you pay for things) to increase (a.k.a. inflation) and the value of what you own to decrease. How much do you pay for milk, to ship packages, etc.? How much is your home worth now? On the flip side, cutting taxes has the same effect on employment (imagine companies with more money hiring more workers to produce more, crazy right?) without the increase in the CPI, no... it actually lowers the CPI if taxes are decreased. So you keep more money in your pocket, AND you pay less for goods and services!!! Look it up, it's in any economics text. That's what none of ye who "get it", "get". A final research point for those who are truly interested in economics and tax cuts and the government printing money and making your stuff worth less: google the Laffer Curve.

If the US continues on this path of non-resolution because of political infighting, which we have seen not to long ago when the issue of raising the (imaginary) debt ceiling that resulted in the US losing it's AAA rating in credit, we will see this country fall as a superpower. Already we have seen failure again on a proposed debt reduction plan one drafted by the repubs and the other by the dems. No compromise. Now our government has let us (the divided people) down again. Defense spending cuts imposed by the automatic reduction plan now in effect because of the ineptitude of the dems and repubs to find an agreeable reduction plan will almost certainly lead to the near dismantling of the finest armed force in the world. We have in government overpaid individuals who act like uninformed individuals like I see here in this post who 'bash' one another by party affiliation or the President. But just like our overpaid, bought by special interest, affluent politicians who have lost touch with the nation's people and our problems we here do exactly the same.

If we do not find consensus in the critical problems this country faces now, we can look to the demise of the United States. So go on and play the blame game just like those in Washington without offering any proposed solutions to the massive problems this country faces. The blame game gets absolutely nothing done and this is exampled by the posts I read on this thread. WE, the people, MUST band together as one somehow without the bickering and join together and FORCE Washington to provide the solutions required to keep our nation from falling and reverse direction and become a great nation again. Excuse me please, but I feel very compelled to interject the following comment at this time because it appears to me that many of the contributors here today have been somehow misinformed. So, if you please...a number of people seem to be complaining that Pres. Obama has failed this nation, yes? The CBO says otherwise. Pres. Obama's stimulus plan has produced 3mil jobs according to the CBO, (Congressional Budget Office), and it should be pointed out that many states and their governors have taken advantage of that same stimulus money, $800bil, which brings up another issue. How is that wasteful spending? If anything, it should have served as a precursor for additional money to grow jobs in this country when the President asked Congress for more money to put 2.1mil unemployed persons back to work plus this money would also be used to hold in place, salaries for teachers, fire-fighters and first responders. The WASTE is in time; that has been spent trying to circumvent the good that Barack Obama is trying to do. If the stimulus money helped to create more jobs, (according to the CBO); then more stimulus money could create more jobs especially in the field of infrastructure because many of those jobs are hammer and nails, spreading tar, or asphalt or whatever; those who want to work will not be picky, I am certain of that.

Obama was very instrumental in ridding the world of some very dangerous individuals like; Osama bin-Laden, Al Awlaki, and who could forget the Mad-Man of the East, Mommar Gadfahi? Barack Obama likewise contributed to his demise; and he did these amazing things without much to do or fanfare. The world is a safer place, yes? It is one thing to boast about getting something right, yet another thing entirely to do what you say and remain humble. Pres. Obama announced their deaths and went back to work. That is class pure and simple, "You wanted them gone, now they are gone!" Emphatically!

He got the health care bill through and the only folk who hate it are the ones who believe that OBamNeycare will cost them more. Mitt Romney advocated the same identical bill in his home state and it works! It is not welfare, it is not a handout, it is there very simply for those who otherwise would not have medical and wellness security without it. That bill was paid for before it ever hit the floor as a referendum; so I don't quite understand what all the whining is about!

Finally, how can any sensible person argue that Obama has failed when his tenure is yet to be completed? He's not done yet, although many racist wish he was because he is on par to out perform his predessors thereby breaking the old boy traditions and bring revitalization and fresh blood to the White House. If you can't be fair, (Republicans), can't tell the truth about the man's accomplishments, then why not simply shut up??? Being fear merchants is a tired game!

Obama isn't responsible for this economic crash, it was well underway when he took office. It will take far longer than 3 years to fix Bush's mess.

Re-elect....you are blind if you think the crash was solely Bush's fault. Both parties have blame in this economy. Bush, for way overspending and getting us involved in two wars while cutting taxes on the entire country, not just the rich, and the Dems for the CRA and their reluctance to take on Freddie and Fannie which led to the housing bubble. Obama has done nothing to make the situation any better. The GOP was destined to lose in 2008 but this country would be in much better shape today if Hilary had been the Dem nominee and been elected over Obama.

Had Bush not enacted the tax cuts that $700B would have been there in surplus to boost the economy without going into deficit. Had Bush not begun the misguided Iraq war, $474B additional would have been available. Obama isn't responsible for Freddy and Fannie and they were only 2 players - also lenders of last resort trying to prop up bad loans made by the private sector.

The economy would be much worse had Obama not done what he did, Hillary would not have done anything substantially different, and a Republican would have let the manufacturing sector implode while propping up the banks.

While both parties have done stupid and/or illegal things causing our economy great stress over the past 200 years or so, Bush/Cheney put 2 wars and a giveaway to the pharma companies into law and off the books. They then cut taxes, mostly for those who can afford to pay them. Finally they handed the treasury over to Halliburton, Black Water and other military and oil based companies with no restraints.

If there was anything stupid, corrupt, criminal or treasonous that the Bush/Cheney team did not do, it wasn't for lack of trying.

Rick... I like what you've said here about promoting bipartisanship and getting our leaders to actually do their jobs, but I don't agree that the tea party has done that. The result of your party gaining control has been the worst deadlock in congress I have ever seen. Bipartisanship is at an historic all-time low because the tea party has taken a stance that they are unwilling to change no matter what. You cannot compromise if you are unwilling to change your position. Progress cannot be made unless agreements and compromises can be reached by our elected officials.

If the tea party really wants things to change for the better, they have to be willing to listen to the other sides of arguments and bend on some of their positions. Being absolutist does not help anyone and only further worsens the divides that are harming us all...

Heh. I don't think the President meant he would allow a spontaneous Q&A. His words were:
